Historically, the country has not lived up to its full potential, with only one UEFA Euro win coming in 1988. The Dutch football fans are known for their intense passion and high expectations. The players are expected to perform at a high level, given the talent on the squad, including Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie De Jong, and others.
It has been quite a while since the Dutch experienced success at this level, with their only triumph occurring in 1988 in this competition. Unfortunately, in the past decade or so, they have failed to meet expectations.

Defenders:- Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool), Stefan de Vrij (Inter Milan), Mickey van de Ven (Tottenham Hotspur), Daley Blind (Girona), Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich), Nathan Ake (Manchester City), Denzel Dumfries (Inter Milan), Lutsharel Geertruida (Feyenoord), Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen) and Ian Maatsen (Borussia Dortmund).
Midfielders:- Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Tijjani Reijnders (AC Milan), Xavi Simons (RB Leipzig), Joey Veerman (PSV), Jerdy Schouten (PSV), and Gini Wijnaldum (Al-Ettifaq).
Forwards:- Steven Bergwijn (Ajax), Memphis Depay (Atletico Madrid), Brian Brobbey (Ajax), Wout Weghorst (Hoffenheim), Donyell Malen (Borussia Dortmund) and Cody Gakpo (Liverpool).
Before the squad announcement, there were only two Dutch players who were completely ruled out of contention for the Euros. One of them is Sven Botman, who unfortunately suffered an ACL injury while playing for Newcastle in March.
On the sidelines, he had the company of Feyenoord’s Quilindschy Hartman, another defender who unfortunately sustained a severe knee injury during his club’s 4-2 Eredivisie victory against Utrecht on March 31.
On the eve of the tournament, there was a lot of buzz surrounding the Dutch team. Unfortunately, their midfield faced some setbacks as Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners, who were expected to start, were ruled out due to injury.
Additionally, Marten De Roon had already been confirmed as unavailable due to an injury he sustained during Atalanta’s campaign. Surprisingly, Jurrien Timber was left out of the squad, apart from those who were unable to play due to injury.
The Arsenal player seemed to be close to complete recovery – and might have had a role to fulfil for Koeman during the tournament. Despite an impressive season with Bologna, Joshua Zirkzee, the former Bayern striker, chooses to stay at home.
It seems likely that Koeman will continue with three defenders, and Stefan de Vrij is expected to be chosen over Van de Ven and Matthijs de Ligt due to his experience. Van Dijk and Ake are highly likely to be in the starting lineup.
