Over the years, the regulations governing football have been added to and altered. Examples include modifications to the back-pass rules, the semi-automatic offside system, and the requirements for player bookings.

The longest ongoing international football competition, the Copa America, is about to implement a new regulation introducing the pink card as an additional card in the game. The concussion substitution will be indicated by the pink card.

The card will be implemented for the same. In March, the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which determines the regulations of the game, authorised permanent substitution for concussions. Before its debut at the Copa America, which is scheduled to take place in the United States from June 20 to July 14, the pink card has never been used in a game.

As decided by the IFAB, the card nomenclature may be used before July 1st, when the law about the pink card will go into effect. “To take care of the footballers’ health, a potential sixth change will be added to the five changes per team authorised by the regulations, as announced by the CONMEBOL Directorate of Competitions and Operations,” a statement said. “

“In the event of a suspected head injury or concussion, this is an additional replacement. To do this, a pink card will be utilised, and either the primary referee or the fourth referee must be notified. The opposition side will be awarded an extra substitution following the regulation once the concussion substitute is made.”

The “additional substitution opportunity” that teams will have is limited to using it for the extra substitute that has been allocated. It has been established by the organisers that players who have been replaced and appear to have suffered a suspected concussion will not be allowed to return to action. After the replacement, the player will be brought to the locker room or a medical facility.

Regardless of whether the player was substituted or not, team physicians will need to fill up and submit paperwork detailing the specifics of the concussion examination to CONMEBOL’s medical commission within 24 hours after the game.

CONMEBOL made this decision in response to mounting pressure on football’s governing bodies to tighten regulations about head trauma and concussions. In addition to the well-known red and yellow cards, the pink card is the most recent addition to the game.
