Who is Adam Wharton? Preview

Following in the footsteps of his older brother Scott, who is currently a player for the club, Wharton entered the academy at the age of six, having been raised in a family of ardent Blackburn supporters. In August 2022, when he was eighteen, he made his debut in a 1-0 loss against Stoke City at home.

Blackburn enjoyed a fantastic season, only missing out on the Championship play-offs by one point, despite that unimpressive beginning. Along with making 18 league appearances and contributing two goals, Wharton was a major contributor to their success.

In December 2023, Wharton inked a five-year deal with Blackburn; however, this would not stop larger teams from showing interest, as Palace made a move for him less than a month later. After an early bid was turned down, Wharton left Selhurst Park and the two teams agreed to a deal worth an initial £18 million ($23 million), which would later increase to £22 million ($28 million).

After his nerve-wracking start in the crushing loss at Brighton, Wharton found some poise fast, and his best performance came in April at Anfield. By unexpectedly overcoming Liverpool, he assisted Palace in snapping a five-game losing skid and severely hurting Jurgen Klopp’s team’s chances of winning the championship.

Palace’s run of six wins in seven games began with the raid of Anfield, and Wharton was outstanding throughout, particularly in the 4-0 thumping of Manchester United. In the Red Devils’ midfield, he shut down Mainoo and Christian Eriksen, freeing up his offensive teammates Michael Olise, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Eze to inflict serious damage.

His team defeated Aston Villa 5-0 on the last day of the season after he recorded his third assist of the year in their subsequent match against Wolves, a 3-1 victory. Wharton’s incredible performance was further enhanced when Southgate invited him up to the England preliminary team, allowing him to compete in his first major competition.

After making an impression on Southgate during training, Wharton will be targeting England’s first pre-tournament friendly against Bosnia & Herzegovina on June 3 at St. James’ Park as the opportunity to make his debut for his country. He will have to work hard to make the 26-man roster and travel to Germany, but he does have an advantage in that there aren’t many direct opponents for the holding midfield spot.

Even if he is not selected in the end, he will have the opportunity to play for Palace for his first full season, where they will undoubtedly be a formidable team following their incredible campaign finale. It seems unlikely that he will remain at Selhurst Park for an extended time.

Adam Wharton would fit right in at any elite club in a few seasons, including Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Liverpool, PSG, and others. For the future, Rodri may have found the ideal replacement at Manchester City.

Adam Wharton would be a great asset for Bayern, Liverpool, Manchester United, and PSG since they all require a holding midfielder for the near and far future.
